Destination: Romance

Writer: Rachael MagruderRachael Magruder

Love is in the air, Smiley Travelers! For our blog post this month, we’re taking a look at two of the most romantic travel destinations in the world, as well as a few alternatives. With Valentine’s Day just a few weeks away, it may be too late to spend it in one of these romantic cities, but it’s the perfect time to start planning your next trip.

Paris

Routinely billed as the most romantic city in the world, there’s no shortage of love in this French city. Here are a few of the loveliest things to do while you’re there:

  • Have a celebratory drink (and maybe some caviar, if you’re feeling fancy) at the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Champagne Bar

  • Visit the Wall of Love or Mur des Je t’aime, a mural with “I love you” written in over 250 languages, and get a selfie with your significant other. This is also a popular proposal spot if you have been looking for the perfect place to pop the question!

  • A Parisian once told me that “in Paris, you don’t manufacture romance, you live it.” If that’s a philosophy you can get behind, all you need to do is start walking! Paris is full of beautiful streets and parks to peruse. Some popular places for a stroll are the Montmartre neighborhood, along the banks of the Seine River, and the nearby Luxembourg Gardens.

  • These ideas too traditional for you? How about a tour of The Paris Catacombs, instead? Part history lesson, part ghost story, this tour is sure to appeal to any couples who like their romance a little dark.

Want the romance of Paris without leaving the states? Consider Seattle! You can have cocktails at the top of the Space Needle and take selfies with all your favorite Seattle street art.

Venice

With its winding canals and classic gothic architecture, Venice looks like something right out of an enchanted fairy tale. Take your favorite person on one of these excursions while you’re in the Sinking City to really woo them:

  • Book a private gondola ride. To really go above and beyond, book a traditional accordionist to serenade the two of you.

  • Prefer a more hands on approach? How about riding kayaks through the canals, instead? Explore Venice’s historic canals at your own pace, and find some hidden gems along the way.

  • Try authentic Venetian cuisine at Cantina Do Spade. This restaurant is over 500 years old and rumoured to be Casanova’s favorite place to seduce his paramores.

If you’ve already been to Venice and you’re looking for a new adventure, how about Amsterdam? Its canals are not as well known, but still breath-taking, and this city features a multitude of art museums, including the Van Gogh Museum.

What are some of your most romantic travel memories? For me, I always think of kayaking through the hot springs at Weeki Wachee in Florida and swimming with manatees on my honeymoon trip. Boats and romance must go hand in hand…

Until next month, Smiley Travelers,

Keep Exploring,
